A Fancy of Folksongs
From Vaughan Williams to McDowall, Asia to North America: Folksong Reimagined Across Borders
This summer Jubilate was joined by renowned pianist Roger Owens for richly varied programme celebrating the enduring power of folk music and its evolution across cultures. While much of the music evoked British pastoral landscapes and childhood reminiscence, we went much further afield, exploring Tippett's arrangements of African-American spirituals and the vibrant Old American Song settings of Copland, as well as touching on folk traditions across Europe and Asia. Roger Owens performed solo works by Cecilia McDowall, who was a very welcome guest in our audience.

Passiontide music by David Lang, Bach, Barber and others

Jubilate Chamber Choir presented composer David Lang's mesmerising and Pulitzer Prize-winning work for chorus and percussion-playing vocal soloists. Through fifteen thought-provoking movements, Lang retells the heartbreaking story by Hans Christian Anderson through the lens and framework of a Bach Passion; a transformation that draws the listener into the action, inviting them to reflect deeply on the nature of suffering. Lang's music was paired with other Passiontide works, most notable of course by Johann Sebastian Bach.
