The music of the Eastern Orthodox church enjoyed a major revival in the 19th and 20th centuries, typified by the success of Rachmaninov's famous All-Night Vigil.
JUBILATE presented a concert of this sonorous and profoundly beautiful music, with selections from All-Night Vigil music by Gretchaninov, Chesnokov and Tchaikovsky, alongside pieces by John Tavener, who drew on this rich style for the sublime Song for Athene. |
