JUBILATE presented a concert of this sonorous and profoundly beautiful music, with selections from All-Night Vigil music by Gretchaninov, Chesnokov and Tchaikovsky, alongside pieces by John Tavener, who drew on this rich style for the sublime Song for Athene. |

Twentieth and twenty-first century British composers delight in exploring their rich folk heritage. A concert celebrating them cannot ignore Vaughan Williams’ contributions, nor Britten’s highly imaginative Flower Songs. Holst’s choral folksong arrangements are an under-recognised gem, and MacMillan’s The Gallant Weaver represents the Scottish composer at his most sumptuous.

Angels and Archangels - Music and carols for Christmas
Friday 9 December 2022, Keble College Chapel, Oxford Jubilate's Christmas concert in the beautiful and resonant chapel of Keble College is always a highlight of the season. This year we celebrated angels in all their manifestations - watchful, beatific, splendid, terrifying and mysterious. The programme included music from the Renaissance to the 21st century, including Jonathan Harvey's "The Angels" the words of which were the inspiration for the evening's theme: Should you hear them singing among stars or whispering secrets of a wiser world, do not imagine ardent, fledging children; they are intelligences old as sunrise - John V Taylor Organist Simon Hogan thrilled us all with a stunning performance of Les Anges from Messiaen's La Nativité du Seigneur and the audience joined the choir for a moving and memorable rendering of Gillian Weir's My Guardian Angel. |
